Lucas Atteveld (NL) builds large scale sculptures in wood exploring the nature of structure, violence, shelter and cultural history. Strongly informed by the history and innovation of military- and sacred architecture Lucas develops modes of construction, shapes and senses of belonging that ultimately result in precisely executed sculptures.

The tracing of historical continuations, shapes and themes that have a consistent relevancy throughout history, plays a central role in his practice and research. An example is his ongoing research in the relationship between bunkers and churches, with the shape of the dome in the center of attention. So far this research has resulted in a thesis and numerous sculptures. Within Lucas work an emphasis on the visceral experience of sculpture is notable, allowing much room for the physical and emotional interaction with the work next to a more intellectual reading of it.

Lucas often makes sculptures for outdoor settings and unconventional presentation contexts, both in public space as in the more contained environment of exhibitions. It is his aim to develop and re-contextualize the discipline of public sculpture.
